BioMASON’s technology uses microorganisms to naturally harden bricks instead of firing them in kilns, thus reducing their environmental impact.

BioMASON injects sand with microorganisms at ambient temperatures to grow construction materials. The production process mimics the growth of coral reefs, and uses the micro-organisms to organically bond the sand and aggregate particles. By feeding the organisms with an aqueous, nutrient-rich solution in a controlled environment, bioMASON can vary the specifications of their construction materials. Traditional clay bricks are hardened using a three-to-four day and energy-intensive firing process, so by eliminating the need for firing their bricks in kilns, bioMASON can boast impressive CO2 and energy savings.

BioMASON employs nature for clean manufacturing processes to grow durable and high-strength cements.

Ginger Krieg Dosier – CEO, bioMASON

BioMASON bricks can be produced on-site using locally available materials, and the company will license its technology to local contractors to grow the bricks themselves. The bricks are certified and tested to be as strong and long-lasting as conventional bricks.

Why you should care

Each year approximately 1.5 trillion bricks are produced worldwide. Traditional clay brick manufacturing utilizes a firing process that consumes fossil fuels, and is responsible for approximately 800 million tons of global CO2 emissions every year. Using bioMASON bricks eliminates the need for the firing process and thereby drastically reduces the carbon footprint of brick production.

How the Global Goals are addressed

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

This innovative process can help to create a more sustainable construction sector by encouraging more local production of bricks and by decreasing energy requirements.

Responsible Consumption and Production

Inspired by coral reef-building micro-organisms, bioMASON uses minimal resources and energy to create construction materials - traditionally an extremely resource and energy intensive industry.

Climate Action

Switching to bioMASON bricks can help to reduce emissions from the cement and concrete industries currently responsible for more than 6% of global emissions of CO2.
