Temporal Power’s flywheel mechanical battery responds immediately to energy demand fluctuations, which facilitates an effective transition to renewable energy integration.

A flywheel is a mechanical battery that stores kinetic energy in a rotating mass. While charging, the solid steel flywheel uses surplus electricity to power a motor that accelerates the flywheel to high speeds. When discharging, the spinning flywheel becomes a generator as it drives a generator while slowing down.

With its ability to rapidly store and discharge electricity, the technology helps the power grid to balance the variable supply of renewable energy from windmills and solar panels, with the demand for electricity. With no scaling limit and minimal life cycle degradation, the flywheel is very durable, almost maintenance-free, and made entirely from abundant and recyclable materials.

At Temporal Power, we are committed to solving global energy challenges more efficiently and
effectively.

Why you should care

Renewable energy generation from solar and wind varies according to how much the sun shines and the wind blows. Supply shortfalls are often covered by fossil fuel-powered generators, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Energy storage can make an important contribution to decoupling demand and supply, making renewable energy sources more attractive and effective. With the help of flywheel technology, power grids around the world can be balanced more efficiently and at lower costs.

How the Global Goals are addressed

Affordable and Clean Energy

With the use of energy storage technologies, such as flywheels, more renewable wind and solar power can be integrated into the grid, reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Temporal Power flywheels can be used to increase the resilience of infrastructure and production of mines, factories and islands where power supplies are unreliable or intermittent.

Climate Action

The flywheels contribute to achieving the IEA recommendation of more than tripling grid-connected electricity storage over the next decade to keep the world under the “2-degree-target”.
