Leading Nordic corporations and institutions are joining forces to create breakthrough action on climate change and the SDGs within the next 1,000 days. The initiative will be launched in New York to an exclusive audience of 100 business and thought leaders on September 20th.

We are in the midst of a critical time. Recent scientific reports have suggested that the window of opportunity to avoid catastrophic consequences of climate change is narrowing, and real climate action has never been more important than it is now. The next 1,000 days are pivotal in tackling climate change and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). What can we accomplish with our new deadline of 2020?

Leadership for a sustainable future

Together with Sustainia, UN Global Compact and DNV GL, a group of Nordic corporations and institutions have taken up the call to be the driving force behind global action. Recent events such as Harvey and Irma have been a wake-up call to this new global reality. We are lagging behind on our commitments on climate change and the achievement of the SDGs. In other words, never has the world needed this many solutions – this fast.

To address this challenge, we will be gathering with our Nordic partners in New York during Climate Week along with one hundred key global leaders and influencers. We are meeting with a common mission, how can we identify ways to fast track action on climate change and the SDGs? Sustainia and our partners invite these global leaders to join us in a task force, to connect, scale and communicate the solutions that need to be enacted before we reach this looming deadline. Together, the global task force will lead by example and steer the world towards a sustainable future.

A platform for global change

The Nordic corporations and institutions that have joined Sustainia in this mission include: GrundfosStorebrandInnovation NorwaySpareBank 1 and Katapult. They have done so as part of our partnership on Global Opportunity Explorer – an online platform showcasing hundreds of business solutions and opportunities addressing the SDGs and fuelling a sustainable future. Not only does the platform provide answers to current global challenges, it also facilitates innovative collaborations across sectors and borders. The Global Opportunity Explorer was initiated through partnership with UN Global Compact, DNV GL, and the support of Realdania. Now this new alliance of Nordic organizations are helping us accelerate and maximize our impact.

Launching climate action

In recent news, we have seen how the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly severe. While Hurricane Harvey ravaged Houston, another water-driven catastrophe unfolded in Bangladesh and India. There is no doubt we will experience more extreme weather events in the future. And with 90% of all larger city areas near coastal areas and rivers – cities will be on the front lines of this new reality.

Therefore, Sustainia and its partners have chosen to begin their mission with a focus on cities. Among the presentations held on the September 20th, Sustainia in partnership with C40 and Realdania will provide highlights from the newest annual edition of the Cities100 report, showcasing 100 of the world’s leading urban solutions for climate change.

Let’s be inspired by these solutions and opportunities. We have 1,000 days; this is our time to accelerate the solutions for a sustainable future.
