The next generation of electricity generating solar film is lightweight, transparent, flexible and also organic.
Conventional thin-film photovoltaic cells contain several heavy metals that are toxic to the environment, if not handled and disposed properly. Heliatek uses organic nanomaterials that are layered onto a flexible PET-based film. This lightweight solar film can be customized in shape and color, and it can be manufactured in a range of transparency levels up to 50%.
We will be the world’s first mass producer of organic thin-film solar solutions for an environmentally friendly and extremely low CO2 electricity era.
Dr. Guido van Tartwijk – CEO, Heliatek
The Heliatek thin-film solar cells absorb a broader spectrum of light than conventional cells, enabling them to harness solar energy under overcast and low-light conditions. Together with the transparency and flexibility of the films, the solar cells are well suited to be integrated in building façades and layered over windows, regardless of orientation and climate.
Why you should care
While solar energy is abundant, it only makes up around 1% of the world’s electricity generation. Due to their unique properties, the solar films developed by Heliatek offer many new applications for solar films, making solar energy attractive to new sectors. At the same time, since the solar cells are organic and free of heavy metals, they reduce environmental pollution.
How the Global Goals are addressed
Affordable and Clean Energy
Heliatek’s solar films have lower investment and operations costs than standard crystalline cells or other thin-film technologies, helping to make clean energy more readily accessible.
Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
This flexible and transparent solar film allows for clean energy generation to be an integrated and visually pleasing part of industrial and commercial buildings.
Responsible Consumption and Production
The organic solar film is produced without the use of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals, ensuring a clean and responsible production and consumption.
Climate Action
Uptake of solar power across an increasing number of sectors reduces demand for conventional fossil fuel based electricity and helps to mitigate climate change.
