The sonnenBatterie is a smart domestic energy storage system incorporating a lithium-ion battery which is guaranteed for up to 10,000 charge cycles or ten years of operation. The battery is charged using electricity from solar panels, enabling a household to cover a share of its power needs with solar energy. sonnenBatterie works in tandem with sonnenCommunity, a virtual network of sonnenBatterie owners connected by a central online platform that links and monitors all members. Members can share their surplus electricity with others in the sonnenCommunity who do not produce enough electricity, making the community independent from conventional energy suppliers.

Members of the sonnenCommunity pay a monthly fee, and in return receive a discounted, 10 year guaranteed battery, low-priced energy from the sonnenCommunity and energy usage optimization to match forecasted weather. After purchase costs, sonnen claims their solution can cut electricity expenses of a typical household by up to 75% within a year. Sonnen currently has more than 10,000 customers.
